Board-certified veterinary surgeon Steven Leshem is a member of the highly skilled surgical team at Veterinary Specialists of Connecticut in West Harford. In addition to treating complex cases, including animals requiring neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, Steve Leshem, DVM, also participates in the practice’s intern training program. In his spare time, he enjoys supporting West Hartford’s Congregation Beth Israel.

Congregation Beth Israel, one of the biggest Reform congregations in the Northeast, consists of about 900 families. Founded in 1843, the synagogue is known as a progressive congregation that provides religious services as well as learning and service programs for members of all ages.

One of Beth Israel’s recent service projects involves re-building a family’s home in hurricane-ravaged Haiti. A rabbi and other volunteers traveled to Haiti in the summer of 2013 to join the home-building project, which was led by the non-governmental organization One Small House. The team participated in all stages of construction, including clearing the building site, readying work tables, raising the frame, and constructing the windows, doors, and roof. The grateful inhabitants of the home, the Genois family, also assisted on the build.
