Founded in 2002, the Society of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery exists to further the field of animal by promoting dialogue and the exchange of knowledge among practitioners and residents of veterinary surgery specialties. The group promotes research and frequently holds seminars and other training to educate veterinary professionals about the techniques used by parallel specialties such as critical care, anesthesia, and internal medicine.

The Society of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery holds meetings all over the country, including Michigan, Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The group also maintains a Listserv site to foster communication and professional development among veterinary surgeons.
